A TRC class is comprised of gifted and highly able
students. The material covered in this class is based
on the Maryland State Curriculum, but reaches each of
the standards in a different way than the other fourth
grade classes. The literature used in this class is at
least that of a fifth grade level. We will be conducting
independent research projects and studying some
science and social studies concepts in depth. However,
our mathematical approach is that of acceleration and
compacting, where students who have mastered
specific skills will not need to be part of the whole
group lesson. We should be beginning fifth grade
mathematics by about April or May. We will also be
spending time solving and creating logic puzzles, as well
as completing creative thinking activities. As I explain
to my students, our class is not better or worse than
any of the other fourth grade classes, just different.
Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns,
or suggestions regarding the concept of a TRC
classroom.
